Google Updates Formula for Ranking Websites

Getty 042115 Smartphone?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1429638332430iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Google is making changes to its formula for ranking websites on Tuesday, favoring those that look good and are easy to use on mobile devices.

Websites that don’t meet Google’s new criteria could have its searches hampered.

“If your website is not, you know, deemed to be mobile friendly then it will be penalized in that if there is a search term or a key word search that before perhaps maybe your website was at the top of the list or had a very good search ranking, you may be bumped down,” explains Michael Gorman with Engadget.

But it’s not really “mobilegeddon” as some have feared because most sites already meet the criteria.

“For a lot of websites this won’t represent a big change just because so much of the web has already been kind of tailored for mobile screens,” Gorman says.

He says what Google is doing is probably going to be good for all users and web developers in general.

“More and more users are using the Internet on their mobile devices. So this is just Google helping push people in the direction that it thinks that they need to go,” Gorman notes.
