McCain, 78, announced his intention to seek reelection during an interview Monday night with NBC News.

The 2008 Republican presidential nominee, who expects a challenge from the far right in his state, has already received the backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

One of the harshest critics of the Obama administration’s domestic and foreign policies, McCain brushed aside questions some might have about his age, bragging about 18-hour work days and boasting that his 103-year-old mother is still doing well.

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee managed to get in a few shots at McCain, claiming he “has supported plans to gut Medicare & Social Security, repeatedly voted to shut down the government, and been the bitter, angry face of obstruction and partisanship in Washington.”
