According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the blaze was called in just after 3 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes and found fire coming out of the windows of the two-story Wilmington Hotel. The LAFD says occupants were jumping from the second story.

Some firefighters used their ladders to assist occupants in escaping the fire, while other firefighters aggressively battled the flames inside.

Twenty-nine people were inside the hotel at the time of the fire. Twelve people were treated and transported to nearby hospitals — 10 with minor injuries and two with moderate to severe injuries. Most injuries were from jumping out of the second story — no one was burned, according to the LAFD.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and arson investigators were combing through the debris to determine what caused it.
