Winfrey remarked that Angelou, who passed away last year, would’ve gotten a “big kick” out of the honor. She said Angelou “would’ve called me up and she would’ve said, ‘Babe’ — in that beautiful way that she does — ‘they’re going to have a stamp with my name and face on it. How incredible is that?'”

Oprah’s speech was interrupted by the power outage in Washington.

The stamp is not without controversy. To the left of a picture of Angelou there’s a quote that reads, “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”

While Angelou did make use of that phrase, it apparently did not originate with her, but rather with author Joan Walsh Anglund.
