Quarterly Earnings Reports, State Unemployment Figures Bring Mixed Results on Wall Street
Published at(NEW YORK) — Mixed results on Wall Street Tuesday as the Labor Department reported steady or lower unemployment rates in most states.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 85.34 to a close of 17,949.59.
The Nasdaq climbed to 5,014.10, a gain of 19.5 from its open, while the S&P 500 dipped 3.09 to 2,097.31.
A Labor Department report released Tuesday morning showed lower unemployment rates in 23 states, while 15 more showed no change. Forty-six states have lower unemployment rates than they did one year ago, the department said, while just three saw increases.
Quarterly earnings reports came in from a number of companies on Tuesday, with Huggies’ maker Kimberly-Clark announcing higher-than-projected revenues, while DuPont dragged down the bluechip index with lower earnings.
