The Miles Pile Up as Households Add More Cars
Published at(WASHINGTON) — Have car, will travel. Have more than one car, travel more. That’s the main finding of the Department of Transportation’s National Household Travel Survey.
According to the survey, households with one car traveled an average of 10,600 miles per year. But add a second car and the travel distance more than doubles to 23,700 miles.
In something of a peculiarity, there’s usually one vehicle in the two-car home that does the bulk of traveling, generally 16,000 miles on average annually.
Overall, just under seven in ten households own either one or two automobiles in the U.S.
According to the survey, traveling does increase with the addition of more cars as households with six vehicles rake in 57,700 miles on average. However, only one percent of households own that many cars.
