Mike Watson/moodboard/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — In case you were thinking about drinking camel urine, don’t. You may get MERS.
As more and more people are affected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus outbreak in South Korea, the World Health Organization has issued advice on how to avoid catching it.
“Food hygiene practices should be observed,” said WHO in a news release. “People should avoid drinking raw camel milk or camel urine, or eating meat that has not been properly cooked.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if camels are infected with MERS, they may act as a carrier of the virus.
WHO also advises people to avoid close contact camels and other animals when visiting farms, markets, or barns in areas where the virus is known to be circulating.
