Local rock station DJ in runnings for national award

IDAHO FALLS – A local rock station DJ is holding his own against top-rated music professionals throughout the country.

“We have one of the most rocking playlists in the country,” Wilt said

Viktor Wilt, program director and morning show host on radio station KCVI-KBear 101, is a finalist in the 2016 Rock Radio Awards hosted by RadioContraband.

“I’m just surprised we’ve been nominated to this point. We’re extremely passionate about what we do, and we’re huge rock fans. We live it like a lifestyle. It is our lives, it’s not just a job,” Wilt said.

Both Wilt, and the radio station are finalists in five categories.

  • Under the Radar Station of the Year
  • Under the Radar Program Director of the Year
  • Best Radio Metal Station of the Year
  • Metal Programmer of the Year
  • Morning Show Host of the Year

There are awards for major market radio stations, medium market radio stations, major and independent labels and more. The Under The Radar category refers to smaller market stations that are not monitored by Mediabase or Billboard.

Regardless of the small markets our local contestants are up against, they are still being judged next to top radio contenders in the country.

“We are up against the biggest and best names in radio in the whole country, so to be nominated alongside these folks is already an award in itself,” Wilt said. “But if we do win I would think it is because we are fanatics for rock.”

Wilt was nominated for the best rock radio morning show in the nation regardless of market size and is up against bigger markets like Detroit. The same goes for the metal categories.

“We’re very very picky about what we play, and we’re not afraid to play heavier music,” Wilt said.

Another station from Boise — KQXR 100.3 The X — has been nominated in medium market categories. Wilt says this makes for an unprecedented representation from Idaho at the national award level this year.

The top contestants were nominated by people employed in the music or radio industry. Voting is currently taking place but only those in the music and radio industry can vote at RadioContraband.com.

The national awards will take place Feb. 17, 2017 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
