GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, Utah (KSL) — At least one person was killed and four more injured in an explosion on a houseboat at Lake Powell, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

About 10 p.m. Wednesday, a “large group” of people in the Crystal Springs Canyon area were attempting to start a generator when it exploded, according to a prepared statement from the sheriff’s office.

A 52-year-old woman was killed, according to the National Park Service. Four others were critically wounded with injuries ranging from broken bones, burns and facial injuries, said Glen Canyon spokeswoman Mary Plumb. Those people were flown by medical helicopter to hospitals in Salt Lake City and Grand Junction, Colorado.

Names and ages of those injured were not immediately available.

The houseboat the group was using was not a rental, according to the National Park Service. A total of 25 people were on board, Plumb said. The boat was anchored on shore near Halls Crossing, she said.
