SHELLEY — An 11-year-old was struck by a car in a crosswalk while on her way to middle school Wednesday morning.

Shelley Police officers responded to the intersection of Locust Street and U.S. Highway 91 at around 7:45 a.m. after a report of the incident. Police reports show a car was traveling northbound on US 91 and the girl was at the Locust Street crosswalk when she was hit.

“(The girl) did everything right,” Shelley Chief Police Rod Mohler said. “She was carrying an orange flag and the driver didn’t see her and hit her.”

The teen was transported by ambulance with her mother to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, but police say she is expected to be okay.

The driver of the vehicle, whose name has not been released, was cited for misdemeanor inattentive driving.

Mohler said speed was not a factor in this incident.
