Classes resume in Firth, student being questioned after threatening to “shoot up the school”

FIRTH — Classes have resumed at Firth schools and a student is being questioned by deputies after making a threat Monday morning.

The student sent a text message to a staff member around 7:15 a.m. threatening to “shoot up the high school,” according to Firth School District #59 Superintendent Sid Tubbs. All of the schools were immediately locked down and high school students were moved to the middle school.

“Buses came and dropped the students off at the middle school as we determined that was a safe location for this type of thing,” Tubbs says.

Officers responded from Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, Blackfoot Police Department, Shelley Police Department and the joint detectives division to assist.

Bingham County deputies were able to find the bus the juvenile was on and placed him in a patrol car. He did not have any weapons or explosives, Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland tells EastIdahoNews.com.

The schools were taken off lockdown around 8:10 a.m. and students returned to their classes or were able to go home if they desired.

“I appreciate the professionalism of our staff, the sheriff and all the deputies,” Tubbs says. “They moved quickly and followed procedures. This is something we hope never happens but hopefully we are prepared.”
