‘This is how I’m dying’: Hunter recalls bear attack that killed guide in Wyoming

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida — A Florida man attacked by a bear on a hunting trip in Wyoming spoke Sunday to WESH 2 News.

Corey Chubon survived the attack, but the guide, Mark Uptain, did not.

Chubon and Uptain were bow hunting Thursday evening in Jackson, Wyoming and shot and elk.

Unable to find the elk Thursday, the pair left and went back to pack it out Friday. As they were preparing to take the animal out, two bears attacked them.

“I don’t even know if I would ever even imagine seeing something like that happening in my life,” Chubon told WESH 2 News. “In probably one of the most poignant moments of all of it, when that bear did have me by the back of the leg, thinking to myself, this is it, this is my death, this is how I’m dying.”

Chubon was able to break away and call for help but received injuries to his leg, chest, and arm.

“I tried to throw the gun to Mark, it didn’t make it to him, landed on the ground. Somehow, the grizzly let me go and charged Mark again and that’s when I made the decision to just run for my life,” Chubon said.

Crews flew him to the hospital, and he was able to leave Wyoming Saturday.

“The approach that he took in dealing with the bears probably saved my life,” Chubon said.

Chubon, back in New Symrna Beach, said it feels almost like a dream at this point.

He told WESH 2 News that Uptain was a father with five children. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Uptain to help his family with expenses. You can find it here.
