MERIDIAN — Police are issuing a reminder to parents about checking your children’s Halloween candy after a 7-year-old received rat poison while trick-or-treating Wednesday night.

The child was in the Presidential subdivision of Meridian, according to a news release from the Meridian Police Department. When the child returned home and was going through their candy with a parent, a small baggy of rat poisoning was discovered.

Investigators were contacted but do not have a suspect as the child was unable to remember which house the poison came from. Parents with children who trick-or-treated in the same neighborhood are urged to check the candy their kids received.

“While it is extremely rare for something like this to happen, parents should always go through their children’s trick-or-treat candy to make sure nobody is trying to hurt your child,” officials said in a news release.

Anyone with information on the situation is asked to contact the Meridian Police Department at (208) 888-6678.
