Woman allegedly stabbed grandfather for calling her a liar

IONA — A local woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly stabbing her grandfather with a pocket knife.

Journie Smith, 18, was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The charge came after Smith allegedly got into an argument with her grandfather and threatening to stab him.

According to documents, the victim told investigators he took the knife away from Smith, but she stabbed him resulting in a puncture wound on his right hand.

After the victim wrestled the pocket knife away from Smith he said Smith then tried to go to the kitchen to get another knife to stab him with.

A witness called 911 while the two were fighting.

When Iona police officers arrived at the scene they saw Smith and the victim fighting. Officers took Smith into custody.

According to documents, Smith told investigators she tried to stab her grandfather because “he called her a liar and wouldn’t get out of her face.”

She also admitted to trying to get another knife from the kitchen.

Smith is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27 for a preliminary hearing. She is facing up 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
