Blackfoot and Snake River school districts close due to illness

BLACKFOOT — The latest school districts to close due to illness are Blackfoot School District 55 and Snake River School District 52.

Blackfoot schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, and resume Monday. Snake River schools, which are on a 4-day schedule, will close Thursday, and resume Monday.

In a news release from District 55, Superintendent Brian Kress said eastern Idaho is being hit harder with illness than normal.

“I am worried as I watch the school districts around us dealing with sickness, I fear we may be watching an ‘ice dam’ and at any moment it may break loose,” Kress said.

He said the K-6 students already had some time off scheduled this week due to parent-teacher conferences, and this makes it an ideal time to help students recover from illness.

The two Bingham County districts join an ever-growing number of school districts and charter schools that have canceled school in the last several weeks due to a variety of respiratory illnesses impacting huge numbers of students and staff.

So far, eastern Idaho has seen school closures in Bonneville, Madison, Fremont, Bingham, Jefferson and Teton counties. The following school districts still have closures this week.

  • Teton School District 401 is closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Ririe School District 252 is closed Thursday
  • Firth School District 59 is closed Thursday.
