BYU-Idaho offering ‘A Campus Thanksgiving’ for students who remain in Rexburg during holiday

REXBURG — Brigham Young University-Idaho is offering it’s students an incentive if they stay in Rexburg for Thanksgiving.

In an email sent to students Tuesday afternoon, the university explains that it will provide a free Thanksgiving take-home meal to its students who remain in Rexburg rather than travel home for the holiday. The pre-cooked meal will be packaged to feed 12 and features turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green salad, rolls, and pie, according to the school’s website.

“Thanksgiving is traditionally a time when friends and families travel and celebrate together,” the email states. “If you choose to travel this holiday season, please be informed of the risks involved. Also, be aware that travel may increase the chances of getting and spreading COVID-19.”

The email goes onto mention that growing evidence shows a risk of COVID-19 transmission from infected people who have no symptoms or before the onset of recognized symptoms. In other words, even if a person feels healthy, there is still a possibility of having and inadvertently spreading the virus to others. In recent weeks, Madison County has seen a massive spike in cases, which has garnered national attention.

“Keep yourself and loved ones safe by counseling with your family to determine the best option for travel this Thanksgiving,” the email says. “To help you make an informed decision, consider using the Student Scenarios webpage.”

Along with the Thanksgiving meal, there will be “safely planned activities” provided by BYU-Idaho at little or no cost to students. Some of those events include indoor games, holiday movies, a fun run, laser tag and watching NFL broadcasts.

The activities begin Nov. 25 and wrap up Nov. 28. Students are asked to sign-up for a meal and/or activities by the end of the day on Thursday.

“BYU-Idaho recognizes that circumstances around COVID-19 may require adjustments to your traditional holiday plans, and we appreciate your consideration and efforts,” the email says. “Have a safe, happy, and healthy Thanksgiving!”

BYU-Idaho representatives couldn’t be reached for any additional comments.
