IDAHO FALLS — Authorities arrested a wanted Rigby man in Idaho Falls on Tuesday.

Around 10:45 p.m. the Idaho Falls Police Department found Makena Lagana, 26, near Benton Street and St. Clair Road, according to a department news release. Last month, the Rigby Police Department said a warrant for felony aggravated assault had been issued for Lagana, calling him armed and dangerous. He managed to elude authorities until Tuesday.

The Rigby Police Department would not go into detail about Lagana’s allegations, citing an ongoing investigation.

When officers in Idaho Falls spotted Lagana, a foot chase ensued through a parking lot, across a street and into a dry canal. Police took him into custody inside the canal.

Police took Lagana to the Bonneville County Jail on the Jefferson County warrant, a Bonneville County warrant for violating a no-contact order, and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

A family spokesperson reached out to EastIdahoNews.com with the following statement on behalf of Lagana and his family.

“We understand Makena has made mistakes as far as his methods of handling situations that require police involvement, but as his family, we would like to say there’s a man beneath what the media has reported,” a family spokesperson said in a statement. “Makena is going through a divorce and a rough time in his life. There is more to Makena than his mistakes and we fully support him in his journey back to the man we know. Makena has two beautiful daughters that have just started their journeys we hope to support him on his so one day he can get back to supporting theirs.”
