National Weather Service predicting rain, lower temperatures through the weekend

IDAHO FALLS — Temperatures will be dropping over the next several days.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello is forecasting “cooler temperatures Thursday and beyond” with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms through the weekend.

A weather graphic below shows daytime temperatures dropping into the upper 40s Thursday for Pocatello and Blackfoot, gradually getting cooler through Monday. A similar pattern is in store for Idaho Falls and Rexburg, with daytime highs on Thursday around 45 and 43, respectively.

Island Park and Driggs are predicted to be around 29 and 35 during the day Thursday and gradually cooling over the weekend.

“Rainfall … through the weekend will aid in snowmelt, and all rivers, creeks should see increased flows,” according to the NWS.

Up to half an inch of rain is expected on the Arco desert over the next three days. Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Swan Valley, McCammon and surrounding communities could get up to a quarter of an inch. The NWS is reporting minimal precipitation along the Interstate 86 and I-15 corridor between American Falls and Idaho Falls. See the graphics below for more information.

Flood advisories and warnings are in effect throughout southeastern Idaho until 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the NWS website. This includes the areas of Soda Springs, Montpelier, Malad, Pocatello and Ketchum.

Snowmelt is attributed as the primary cause of flooding in these areas.

“Many small reservoirs have been filling quickly and are in danger of uncontrolled releases,” the NWS reports. “Reservoirs most likely to fill through the weekend include reservoirs in Oneida and Franklin Counties.”

EastIdahoNews.com reported significant flood mitigation efforts happening in Inkom Tuesday afternoon. Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas may continue Thursday.

The NWS is reminding drivers that most flood deaths happen in vehicles. If you see a flooded road, turn around to avoid drowning.
