A FRIGHTENING SCENE — A doorbell camera captured the intense moment when a Minnesota mother helped get 22 children off a school bus that caught on fire in front of her house this month.

Carrie Thorpe had walked outside her home in Bethel, Minnesota, to get her six-year-old daughter off the school bus when she noticed flames coming from above the front tire. That’s when Thorpe sprung into action and ran to the bus to alert the driver.

“As soon as I got out the door … I noticed the first flame right above the tire, and I immediately yelled, ‘Fire,’” Thorp recalled.

Thorpe and the bus driver began quickly ushering the elementary students out of the bus.

“Kids were crying. Kids were scared, freaking out,” she told CBS Evening News. “It was quite emotional and kind of frantic.”

The kids gathered on Thorpe’s front porch and then moved down the street and away from the bus. Once the children were off the porch, the front right tire exploded followed by the left front tire.

“It moved pretty fast,” Thorpe said. “It was probably within 15 minutes that thing was engulfed. It was crazy to see the tires explode.”

The school bus was completely charred in the fire and the asphalt under the bus even melted from the heat. Miraculously though, nobody was injured.

About a week later, the students got together, and along with parents and school leaders, they recognized the bus driver and Thorpe for their heroic efforts. They were both given a “thankful basket.”

“A lot of emotions just keep coming up the more you talk about it and realize how amazing this community is,” Thorpe said.

The fire was under investigation.
