MOUNTAIN HOME — Idaho State Police are investigating a deadly wrong-way crash that shut down part of Interstate 84 for hours early Monday morning.

The collision happened around 1:20 a.m. near mile marker 102 in Elmore County, when troopers say a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 was traveling east in the westbound lanes. The pickup struck a westbound semi-truck and trailer head-on, causing both vehicles to erupt in flames.

The driver of the Dodge, a 35-year-old man from McGregor, Texas, died at the scene, according to ISP. The 34-year-old semi-truck driver from Riverside, California, was flown by air ambulance to a nearby hospital. His condition has not been released.

The crash blocked both westbound lanes for roughly six and a half hours as fire crews, medics, and investigators worked to extinguish the blaze and clear the wreckage. As of Monday morning, the left westbound lane remains closed.

Drivers are urged to check 511.idaho.gov for updates.
