STANLEY — A kayaker has died after reportedly becoming stuck under logs on Marsh Creek near Stanley.

According to a Facebook post from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified on Tuesday, around 7:49 p.m., by the Valley County Sheriff’s Office that they had received texts to 911 about a kayaker stuck under logs on Marsh Creek.

Around 7:54 p.m., Custer County Search and Rescue was deployed. At 8:39 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office was advised that CPR had been initiated by others in the party.

An Air St. Luke’s Medical Helicopter was dispatched from Wood River; however, they could not land on scene due to terrain.

Idaho National Guard was requested to assist, and was able to retrieve the man and deliver him to a Stanley Ambulance at the Boundary Creek parking lot along Idaho Highway 75. Unfortunately, the man could not be revived.

The sheriff’s office says names are not being released at this time as the family is still being notified.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” says the post.

On Wednesday, the Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Office supplied a helicopter to aid Search and Rescue efforts in extracting more members of the rafting party.

“Some of those members were replaced by new members for the purpose of being able to get the party’s rafts and gear further downriver to where it could be feasibly removed from the river,” says the post.

As of Thursday, Custer County Search and Rescue, along with local volunteers, are continuing to rescue the remaining eight people from the established exit point.
