Crews gain upper hand on lightning-caused fire near Idaho-Utah border

FISH HAVEN – Firefighters battling the half-acre lightning-caused Alpine Slough Fire are hoping to have it controlled by Sunday at 8 p.m.
That’s the latest update from Caribou-Targhee National Forest in a 5:30 p.m. news release Saturday. The blaze started Friday afternoon near the Idaho-Utah state line by Wilderness Peak about 10 miles west of Fish Haven after multiple trees caught fire. Firefighters describe it as a “moderate” fire. They had it fully contained Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
The blaze poses no threat to buildings or homes.

The U.S. Forest Service, who is working to put it out, remains on scene Saturday evening with three fire engines and one wildland fire module.
“Resources put in approximately a .5-mile hose lay from Gibson Lakes – to aid is mop-up operations. Crews are making good progress toward estimated control,” the news release says.
The Alpine Slough Fire is one of at least 10 active wildfires burning across eastern Idaho Saturday evening. The full details are available through the Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center.
Fire danger is very high Saturday amid scorching heat throughout eastern Idaho. Daytime temperatures will reach or surpass 100-degrees Fahrenheit in some areas on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Pocatello.
Firefighters are reminding people to make responsible decisions outdoors. Practice good fire safety and don’t do anything illegal that could start a fire.
