Man arrested after he allegedly ran over a woman with his truck and drove away

IDAHO FALLS — A 36-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly ran over a woman with his truck and drove away without helping her.
Jacob Luke Burns of Ririe is charged with felonies for domestic battery, failing to render aid in an accident, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, and possession of a controlled substance. He was also charged with misdemeanors for possession of a controlled substance and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burns has not yet hired an attorney or been assigned a public defender. EastIdahoNews.com will reach out to his attorney when he gets one, and update this article if we receive a comment.
According to a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s office, deputies had been searching for Burns in relation to an alleged domestic battery incident that reportedly took place the day before.
On Tuesday, deputies responded to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where a woman was being treated for injuries received after allegedly being run over by a truck during an altercation with Burns that afternoon. The victim stated she had an argument with Burns at the storage units located near Iona Road and 15th East.
As Burns was trying to leave in his pickup, the victim said she was holding onto the truck and was thrown into the edge of the building, and then underneath the truck, where she was run over.
Burns drove away from the area, and the victim was able to get to her car and drive to a friend, who took her to the hospital. Deputies say the victim had injuries to her head and extremities, and later found evidence at the scene corroborating what she had described.
During that time, Burns had reported the incident to dispatch, saying he and the woman were arguing and she was hitting him as he was trying to get away.
Burns stated he did not know his truck had struck the woman, but that he wanted to be a victim of domestic battery. At approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, a deputy reportedly saw Burns driving near Iona Road and 15th East and initiated a traffic stop to contact him.
As he made contact, the deputy said that Burns showed signs of impairment, along with the smell of marijuana coming from inside the car.
Burns was detained while deputies searched the vehicle, where they allegedly found multiple items of drug paraphernalia and packaging used for illegal drug distribution. Deputies also allegedly found approximately 16 grams of methamphetamine and approximately 20 grams of marijuana in the car.
Later, deputies retrieved surveillance footage from a nearby business showing the two arguing at the storage units and Burns driving away.
The footage reportedly showed the woman being struck by the truck, with the back end bouncing up as it went over part of the victim’s body. The truck is then seen driving away from the storage units.
Burns was placed under arrest and transported to the Bonneville County Jail. He has not yet been given a bond.
