Slow-moving storms unleash flash flooding in Pocatello neighborhoods

POCATELLO – Several small-moving thunderstorms moving over Pocatello Thursday afternoon resulted in flash flooding.
The National Weather Service in Pocatello reports it happened around 2:30 p.m. on South 5th Avenue near Interstate 15. Although the storms were small, dropping up to an quarter of an inch at the most, the occurrence of multiple rain storms simultaneously resulted in several inches of rain falling at the same time in one spot.
“That first storm dumped all its rain in one concentrated area because it was moving very slowly,” Meteorologist Audra Moore tells EastIdahoNews.com. “The other storms right behind it slowly moved into the same area that had already been getting rain.”
Reports of water building up in basements led the bureau to issue a flash flood warning. Several photos sent to EastIdahoNews.com show several inches of water on the intersection of Samuel and McDougall right off the exit.
Moore says the concentrated downpour lasted about an hour and has since dissipated. As of 4:45 p.m., the flash flood warning is no longer in effect.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely in parts of eastern Idaho Thursday night. Most of them will occur south of Interstate 84 and east of I-15, according to Moore. She anticipates more isolated rain on Friday as well.
