When they arrived, they found the victim, identified as Lesa Perrenoud, with a gunshot wound. It is unclear where she sustained the injury.

Deputies and emergency medical professionals began life-saving efforts and transported her by air ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where she later died from the severity of her injuries.

Investigators say they have determined that Perrenoud was shot by a family member while they were performing maintenance on a gun.

The incident was reportedly witnessed by other family members inside the home.

EastIdahoNews.com has decided not to identify the family member at this time out of respect for the family, and because charges have not been filed. According to the release, the investigation will be forwarded to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine if any legal action will be taken against the family member.

“The Madison County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Lesa Perrenoud during this difficult time,” says the release.

According to her obituary, Perrenoud had been an ICU nurse at Madison Memorial Hospital for the last 30 years and was an avid photographer.

“Lesa loved doing anything and everything outdoors. Oftentimes, you would find her on a river trip, hiking in the mountains, or in her Can-Am riding the mountain top with family,” says her obituary. “Lesa had found her love for photography started in high school. She was an avid photographer; a camera was usually within her reach.”
