Battle won: Power County’s Lake Channel Fire reaches full containment

AMERICAN FALLS — Firefighters have fully contained the Lake Channel Fire near Massacre Rocks after several days of battling challenging conditions that included shifting winds and triple-digit temperatures.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Great Basin Unit 3, in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management’s Idaho Falls District, says that the fire reached 100% containment on Sunday.

The lightning-caused fire that started last Wednesday, north of Interstate 86 and the Snake River, burned 2,516 acres, drawing a large mutual-agency response.
Despite two days of strong winds and temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, containment lines held, preventing the fire from crossing established control lines.
As of Sunday, 85 personnel remained assigned to the fire. Crews continue to patrol the fire perimeter, extinguish hotspots, and monitor the area to ensure the blaze does not rekindle.
Matthew Rose, spokesman for the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Great Basin Unit 3, said firefighters had hoped to reach full containment by Saturday evening. However, Idaho’s unpredictable winds posed additional challenges and delayed that goal slightly.
No structures were lost and no injuries were reported.
Officials said this will be the final update on the Lake Channel Fire unless there is a significant change in fire activity.
