HEISE – The majority of the Big Rock Fire has been contained, according to officials, but crews are remaining on the hill to prevent any reignitions.
According to the U.S. Wildfire Service-Great Basin, the fire has burned 2,142 acres and is 85% contained as of Monday morning, with 134 personnel fighting the fire.

“Progress remains steady and consistent on the Big Rock Fire as crews continue to secure containment lines, patrol the fire perimeter, remove hazard snags, and extinguish remaining hotspots,” says a news release from USWFS. “Firefighters will continue mop-up operations and strengthen containment lines to ensure the fire remains within the existing perimeter.”
The release says this will be the last daily update on the fire unless there is a significant change in the conditions.
“The progress made on the Big Rock Fire reflects the dedication and professionalism of firefighters and support personnel who worked through steep and rugged terrain, hazardous vegetation types, and hot, windy weather conditions,” says the release. “Their commitment to safety and operational excellence substantially reduced fire potential while protecting the residences, resources, and facilities of the Heise area and businesses.”
Road and area recreation closures will remain in effect to protect public and firefighter safety.
The Heise Road east of 7N ranch, Kelly Canyon, and River Road, both east of Kelly Canyon and west of the Heise Bridge, remain closed. Fire suppression activities are ongoing in these areas, and officials ask the public to avoid the area and follow responder instructions.
Closures for camping at Kelly Island Campground, Wolf Flats, Warm Springs, and all dispersed sites along the River Road remain in effect through Sunday, Aug. 16. Area closures related to Cress Creek Nature Trail and Stinking Springs trail, and all other hiking and biking trails in the Kelly Canyon and Heise areas, remain in effect.
