Doublesprings Fire still burning after 5 weeks as cooler, wetter weather arrives

CHALLIS — After five weeks of burning in rugged terrain southeast of Challis, firefighters continue to make progress on the lightning-caused Doublesprings Fire.
The fire was first reported July 24 in Christian Gulch, approximately 21 miles southeast of Challis on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Fire activity has remained minimal in recent days, with crews focusing on securing the southern portion of the fire, according to the latest information from the National Interagency Fire Center and Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Weather conditions are also helping. Cooler temperatures and increased moisture are moving into the area, with rain showers possible Friday and more likely Saturday, according to a National Weather Service spot forecast issued specifically for the Doublesprings Fire.
Saturday’s high temperatures near the fire are expected to reach only the mid- to upper 60s after long periods of hot, dry weather complicated firefighting efforts earlier.
The weather changes should help moderate fire behavior and give crews better conditions to strengthen containment lines.
Closure orders for Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management roads due to the fire have been lifted. Visitors returning to the area are being asked to use caution and remain aware of firefighters and equipment that may still be working nearby.
