Last chance to visit Upper Mesa Falls before extended closure

ASHTON — Visitors have just a few days left to explore the Upper Mesa Falls Recreation Area, one of eastern Idaho’s most popular scenic attractions, before it closes.
The Caribou-Targhee National Forest will close the entire Upper Mesa Falls Recreation Area beginning Aug. 10 as crews begin a major renovation project. The closure is expected to remain in place through the winter.

The project includes road repairs and chip sealing throughout the recreation area. Forest officials said the work was scheduled for late summer and fall to minimize impacts on visitors while providing the weather conditions needed to complete the project successfully.
“Although fall is a beautiful time to visit Mesa Falls, it also provides the window needed to complete this necessary renovation project,” Forest Engineer Steve Jenkins said. “We want to make sure people have every opportunity to visit before work begins.”
While Upper Mesa Falls will be inaccessible during construction, the nearby Lower Mesa Falls area, located less than a mile south along the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, will remain open. Visitors can still enjoy hiking trails, scenic overlooks and views of the lower waterfall.
