Family, laughter take center stage in American Falls Little Theatre production

AMERICAN FALLS — A heartwarming comedy about family, love and the lengths grandparents will go to keep their grandchildren close is coming to the American Falls Little Theatre stage this month.
“Over the River and Through the Woods,” written by Joe DiPietro and directed by Abby Morgan, will be performed Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 1-3.
The story centers on Nick Cristano, a young man who enjoys a close relationship with his four grandparents and joins them for their traditional Sunday dinners. But when Nick is offered his dream job in Seattle, his grandparents are devastated by the thought of him moving away.
Determined to keep their grandson close to home, the four hatch a series of schemes to convince him to stay, including introducing him to a charming young woman they hope will give Nick one more reason not to leave.
Morgan said the comedy offers plenty of laughs while exploring generational bonds and the importance of family and tradition, with a few moments that could even bring tears to the audience’s eyes.
Morgan said one of the most rewarding parts of directing the production has been watching the cast grow into their roles and come together along the way.
“It’s gratifying seeing the moments that started on a script turn into something real on stage,” she said. “As the director, getting to watch each cast member bring their character to life has been one of my favorite parts of this experience.”
The local cast includes Chance Morgan as Nick, Brooke Murphy as Aida, Braeden Murphy as Frank, Brad Phythian as Nunzio, Emily Wright as Emma and Emma Kendall as Caitlin.
“I’m so proud of this group and everything we’ve created together,” she said.
Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, 25 and 26 and Oct. 1, 2 and 3. A matinee will also be held at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.
