Idaho gas prices up 7 cents this week

The following is a news release from the American Automobile Association in Idaho.

BOISE – Idaho gas prices continue to climb, though not as quickly as in previous weeks. According to AAA, Monday’s average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $4.86, which is seven cents more than a week ago, 37 cents more than a month ago, and $1.34 more than a year ago.

“In a season of unusually large spikes, this week was a bit calmer, but the results still aren’t good,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “We have a real chance of seeing the state average approach the $5 mark before all is said and done.”

The national average currently sits at $4.47, which is 16 cents more than a week ago, 37 cents more than a month ago, and $1.29 more than a year ago. Despite an increase, Idaho fell two places to 9th in the country for the most expensive fuel behind California ($6.16), Washington ($5.56), Hawaii ($5.53), Nevada ($5.29), Oregon ($5.09), Alaska ($5.06), Michigan ($4.91), and Illinois ($4.90).

Today, the West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is trading around $95 per barrel after nearly $106 during the middle of last week. Given the continued volatility of conflict in Russia, Ukraine, and in the Middle East, it’s too early to see today’s price drop as part of a larger trend.

“Tensions are running high, and until conditions improve, there is little reason to think that the crude oil market will settle down,” Conde said. “Our trucking friends are feeling it too, with Idaho diesel currently selling for around $6.47 per gallon, up from $3.83 just one year ago. For now, we’ll continue to feel the pain when fueling up, boarding a plan, or shipping a package.”
