IDAHO FALLS — Three local schools were put on a hall check on Friday morning, after a student allegedly threatened to bring a gun to school.

According to an alert sent to parents by Idaho Falls School District 91 at 10:35 a.m., a student at Eagle Rock Middle School reportedly made a threat that “referenced bringing a firearm to school.”

Due to their close proximity, Eagle Rock Middle School, Ethel Boys Elementary, and Skyline High School were all placed on a hall check for approximately 40 minutes, meaning that staff and students stayed inside the buildings and classrooms, while school operations continued.

“Our first priority is always the safety of our students and staff,” says superintendent Karla LaOrange and Eagle Rock Principal Shawn Rose in the alert. “District 91 and IFPD take all reports seriously. We encourage all students to talk to a trusted adult immediately if they hear or see something that concerns them.”

According to Jessica Clements, spokeswoman for the Idaho Falls Police Department, officers were notified on Friday morning of a potential threat to Eagle Rock Middle School. During the investigation, a male student was arrested regarding a battery charge from a fight earlier in the week.

This student also allegedly made the threat to the school.

Clements says there is no evidence of a gun being brought to any of the schools, and officers are continuing to investigate.

The district sent out a follow-up message at 11:17 a.m., confirming a student was in custody, and ending the hall check.

“The student who made the threat is in custody,” says the alert. “The investigation is still ongoing, and we will provide updates as they become available.”
