BOISE — The United States Attorney for the District of Idaho has announced his retirement.

U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis will retire effective Oct. 17, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, District of Idaho.

“I am unable to overstate the privilege it has been to work with the dedicated and remarkable women and men of the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” says Davis in the release. “These great lawyers and support staff faithfully enforce the law, work to keep Idaho and our country safe, support our law enforcement partners, and protect the civil rights of others. I am proud of the work they do every day.”

Davis was nominated by President Donald J. Trump on March 31, 2025, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Oct. 7 of that year. He previously served in this position from Sept. 21, 2017, to Feb. 28, 2021, under Trump’s first term.

“As U.S. Attorney, Davis served as the top-ranking federal law enforcement official in the state of Idaho, having prosecutorial responsibility over 44 counties in Idaho, encompassing more than 83,000 square miles and a population of nearly 1.5 million people,” says the release. “He led three staffed offices located in Boise, Coeur d’Alene, and Pocatello with 65 employees, including 33 attorneys. The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the district, including crimes related to immigration, terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation, firearms, and narcotics.”

During his tenure in the role, Davis’ office reportedly filed or defended 355 civil cases and collected $9.2 million in money owed to the government from civil and criminal judgments.

“I continue to be grateful to Sen. Michael D. Crapo and Sen. James E. Risch for their continued confidence and trust,” says Davis in the release. “And I am particularly grateful to President Donald J. Trump for the opportunity to return as Idaho’s U.S. Attorney.”

The release says Davis was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, but was raised in Idaho Falls, where he began his legal practice focusing on commercial, regulatory and transactional work. Davis also served in the Idaho State Senate for 19 years, including 15 years as majority leader, and was a member of the Judiciary, Rules and State Affairs committees.

He represented Idaho as a commissioner to the Uniform Law Commission and is past chairman of the Council of State Governments.

“He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978 and from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1980,” says the release. “Mr. Davis recently celebrated his 50-year wedding anniversary with his wife, Marion. Together they have six children and 14 grandchildren.”
