Stampede at South African College Kills One; Others Injured
Published at(JOHANNESBURG) — A stampede at a South African university campus killed one person Tuesday. A crowd of prospective students in Johannesburg became unruly while trying to register for one of the limited slots at the University of Johannesburg. Dozens more were injured in the chaos.
In the 24 hours prior to the incident, the university claims 7,000 applications had been submitted, but only 800 could be accepted, according to The Guardian.
More than half of South Africa’s young people are unemployed. Higher education is viewed as the most legitimate way to escape poverty.
