IDAHO FALLS — The city of Idaho Falls will soon be picking up residents’ trash with an automated system.
The city announced the implementation of Phase 1 of the Residential Auto-Load Refuse Collection program Friday. The program means sanitation workers will no longer have to take people’s trash by hand. If you live in one of the nearly 4,200 homes affected this month, you will get a flier next week. The new garbage containers will be delivered Aug. 17 to 27. The automated services will begin Aug. 31, and city officials are asking people to start using the containers then. Kerry McCullough, Idaho Falls spokesperson, said the new program will reduce costs and improve safety of the workers of the sanitation department. She said no workers will lose their jobs because of the program. She said certain things like paint, oil, large branches, flammable materials should not be placed in the containers. If the items cannot be picked up, the sanitation department will tell you where you can go to get rid of them.
