“The Bond people are wonderful and I’d like to work with them,” he told Men’s Health U.K. “But it all depends on directors, and scripts, and whether they want me to do it. Plus, there’s a time factor.”

For now, Cavill is busy. Not only is he set to star in U.N.C.L.E., but he’s also playing Superman in the Man of Steel sequel Batman v Superman, out in 2016. Cavill said that role may prevent him from stepping into 007’s world.

“Let’s say the DC Universe keeps growing: they haven’t announced any more standalone Superman movies, but they may well do. That takes a full year out,” he explained. “If The Man From U.N.C.L.E.becomes a franchise, there’s that…I’m not too sure when I could fit it in.”

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is based on a ’60s TV series about an American and a Russian — Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin — who work together as a team for the titular international espionage agency.

Cavill plays Solo in the Guy Ritchie-directed film, but he warns that moviegoers shouldn’t compare his role to that of James Bond.

“Solo is not like Bond at all: in our film, he’s a thief who gets busted because of a jilted woman who sells him out, and then he’s blackmailed into working for the CIA,” he clarified. “Solo is brains rather than brawn, or guile rather than strength.”

The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which also stars Armie Hammer and Hugh Grant, is out August 14.
