SANDY — Two adults and one juvenile were killed in a shooting on a street a few blocks away from an elementary school Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Two other juveniles were injured, one critically, in the shooting.

Police responded to a report of a shooting near 2200 E. Alta Canyon Drive (8600 South) at about 3:45 p.m., according to Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen.

A person Nielsen described as a Good Samaritan saw an adult woman with two juveniles in the street and stopped their car so they could drive them out of the area. At that time, a man rammed the Good Samaritan’s vehicle, bringing it to a stop.

The man then exited the vehicle and started shooting at it, Nielsen said.

An adult female and juvenile male were killed as a result of the shooting, Nielsen said, and the male suspect was also among the dead.

A boy was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and a girl was transported in stable condition, Nielsen added.

The Good Samaritan was not among the deceased, he added; he would not confirm whether or not that individual was injured.

Nielsen did not provide ages of the individuals.

As of early Tuesday evening, police did not release information regarding a possible motive, or the relationship between those involved in the shooting.

Between 20 and 30 officers responded to the shooting that occurred blocks from Brookwood Elementary School. Because it happened after school hours, many students found shelter in nearby businesses and homes as they were walking home. Officials from Canyons School District later requested for those students to be returned to the school where their parents could pick them up.

District officials sent a message to families saying crisis counselors would be available at the school Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday for those affected by the shooting.

The office of Sen. Orrin Hatch said Hatch reached out to Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan and offered any assistance necessary.

More information will be added as soon as it is made available.
