UPDATE:

As of 8 p.m. some 286 Idaho Falls Power customers remain without electricity in their homes or business. That number is down from 11,000 customers early this morning, according to Idaho Falls Power officials.

Many small- or medium-sized power outages began occurring after 3:30 a.m. Saturday due to significant snow fall. The wet, heavy snow resulted in significant damage to trees and subsequent damaged to power lines and transformers across the city.

Idaho Falls Power crews have been working on the outages since about 3:30 a.m. and will continue to work into the evening.

No estimate has been given on complete restoration. City officials say they are working as quickly as possible.

ORIGINAL STORY:

IDAHO FALLS — Eastern Idahoans woke up to a winter wonderland Saturday as several inches of snow fell overnight and more than 10,000 Idaho Falls Power customers lost power.

Some areas received 3-6 inches of snow and the heavy powder caused tree branches to fall.

Idaho Falls Power reports nearly 12,000 people were without electricity as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Several EastIdahoNews.com users say transformers blew overnight, likely causing the outages. Crews are working to restore the power.

Due to the wide variety of outage locations, the city currently does not have an estimated restoration time.

The National Weather Service predicts the moderate wind, the snow, and the rain will stop by mid-afternoon with the snow beginning to melt some in the late afternoon. Temperatures will drop again Saturday night.
