Woman recovering after being hit by SUV

REXBURG — A woman was taken to the hospital after being struck by an SUV Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old, who attends Brigham Young University-Idaho, ran into a crosswalk at the intersection of South 2nd East and 1st South around 4 p.m., according to police.

“The driver didn’t have enough time to stop. He tried to avoid an accident but he struck her,” Rexburg Police Capt. Randy Lewis says.

The woman was taken to Madison Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 44-year-old driver will not be cited, Lewis says, and police hope this serves as a reminder to all pedestrians to use caution around crosswalks.

“A crosswalk is not a total safe zone. It doesn’t give a pedestrian 100 percent right of way as there are rules they have to follow,” Lewis says. “If a vehicle is so close it can’t stop, pedestrians should stop and wait.”
