New Delhi Shut Down: Protests Erupt in Support of Rape Victim
Published at(NEW DELHI) — Protests continued in India on Monday following the gang-rape last week of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in Delhi.
Young demonstrators were beaten back by police with bamboo sticks and water cannons. The Indian government has imposed a curfew and closed much of the city, including metro stations.
More than one hundred people were injured in clashes this weekend.
The victim is in critical condition at a local hospital.
India’s prime minister says public anger is justified but is appealing for calm, and promising better security for women in the city.
