Sources: Rangers Targeting Alain Vigneault
Published at(NEW YORK) — The New York Rangers have targeted Alain Vigneault as their next head coach, according to ESPNNewYork.com.
Vigneault was in New York on Friday and was believed to meet with owner James Dolan, a league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Former Rangers All-Star Mark Messier was a top candidate for the job and met with the ownership earlier this week.
“We had our scouts meetings and I’ve had conversations with Glen [Sather, general manager], and like anybody that would be interested in coaching, obviously the Rangers would be a dream come true for a lot of coaches,” Messier said, according to NHL.com. “I told Glen I would have interest, so we’ve had discussions, and that’s where it stands right now.”
John Tortorella was fired after the team was knocked out of the playoffs by the Bruins in five games.
The Rangers are aiming to hire a new coach by June 30.
