FIRTH – Firth boys basketball coach Scott Adams is retiring after 19 years as Cougars’ head coach over two stints.

Firth won seven state titles during Adams’ tenure.

“I thought about it all year,” Adams said. “It’s time. You feel like it’s time for someone else to take over.”

Adams, who is a grandfather, noted family played a role in his decision. His son Michael will be graduating after a senior season in which he was named conference MVP and helped lead Firth to a third-place trophy at this year’s 3A state tournament.

Looking back, Scott Adams said he didn’t have time to really appreciated the program’s success during his coaching stint.

“I’m sure I will (appreciate it),” he said. “That’s one of the things I wish that I could have figured out to do better as a coach. To enjoy the moment when you go to the state tournament. Just enjoy the moment … As far as thinking about what we’ve done over the last 19 years I haven’t really thought about it. I’m sure I will. I know I’m going to miss it. When I think about the past I think about the kids and how fortunate I’ve been to coach some great kids.”

Adams will remain as the school’s athletic director.
