IDAHO FALLS — A local man was indicted by a grand jury on May 22, accusing him of rape of a now 12-year-old girl.

Jason Varnal Evans, 56, was charged with felony rape and two counts of lewd conduct with a minor under the age of 16 years age.

If Evans is found guilty, he faces a minimum sentence of one year to life in prison.

An order was made to seal the court documents the same day he was indicted.

According to the complaint, it alleges that Evans committed the felonies between January 2019 and January 2021.

The victim would’ve been around 6 years old when the alleged crimes occurred.

Evans is scheduled to appear before District Judge Michael Whyte for an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. on June 9.

Though Evans has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
