After only two hours of labor, giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to one cub at 5:32 p.m. Friday.
Mei Xiang’s parenting instincts kicked in right away. After the birth, she scooped up her cub, cradling it against herself, the Washington Post reports.
The zoo plans to give the cub a physical examination on Saturday.
According to the Washington Post, Mei Xiang gave birth to a four-ounce cub in September. The baby female cub died after six days due to liver problems.
