July 24th, 1945 - March 11th, 2026
Lane Drew Smith, 80, of Firth, Idaho, peacefully passed away on March 11, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Lane was born July 24, 1945, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Tom and LaRue Smith. He was the second of four sons and grew up in Marsh Valley, where he was close to his brothers, Kirk, Craig, and Evan Smith. Raised on the family farm, Lane learned the value of hard work early in life and developed a lifelong love of sports and the outdoors.
After graduating from Marsh Valley High School, Lane attended Utah State University, where he met the love of his life, May. They both graduated with degrees in education and were married on August 10, 1967.
Lane became a beloved teacher and coach at the schools in Firth, touching the lives of thousands of students over his long career. He also worked laying carpet throughout eastern Idaho, continuing into his 70s.
An avid outdoorsman, Lane loved spending time with his family at the ocean, exploring the mountains, and enjoying lakes and rivers. He also enjoyed reading, leatherworking, puzzles, and building models. He and May took great pride in creating and maintaining the beautiful yard surrounding their home. Lane was known for his generosity and humor, playing the harmonica, telling stories, and reciting poems around the campfire, always bringing laughter to those around him. His enormous patience, especially in a house full of girls, was a hallmark of his character.
Lane and May had four daughters: Jennifer, Lisa, Stacie, and Carrie. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Sydney, Sterling, Aria, Kacie, Kobe, Ethan, Kaleb, Amelia, and Elaine and two great-grandchildren. His family was the light of his life.
