Tribes Want State-Funded 911 System
Published at | Updated at(FORT HALL, ID) – The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have been denied a $238,000 state grant to establish their own 911 system. Tribal leaders have been trying for years to get a 911 system exclusively for the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, but the current process splits up calls between dispatch centers in Bannock, Bingham, Power, and Caribou Counties. Officials with the state’s Emergency Communications Commission say Fort Hall is a sovereign nation, and that the agency has no regulatory control on tribal land. Authorities say all 911 systems are generally run at a county level.
