From his southern roots, growing up in Newton, North Carolina, he built a remarkable life and career that took him across the United States and abroad. Along the way, he called South Carolina, Florida, California, Virginia, Germany, Washington, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, and ultimately Idaho home, spending his final 32 years in Idaho Falls.

A gifted engineer and lifelong learner, Richard earned degrees from North Carolina State University and the University of Florida, including a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. During a distinguished career spanning more than 45 years, he served as an engineer, scientist, executive, educator, consultant, and project manager. His work supported some of the nation’s most significant nuclear energy, environmental restoration, waste management, and safety initiatives. He held leadership positions across government and private industry, authored more than 150 publications and presentations, and earned the respect of colleagues throughout the United States and abroad.
Richard’s career took him to many of the country’s most important Department of Energy facilities, including Hanford, Idaho National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Savannah River, Los Alamos, and Pantex. He was deeply committed to protecting workers, advancing science and engineering, and solving complex environmental and technical challenges. His work left a lasting impact on the fields of nuclear engineering, environmental restoration, and industrial safety.
While proud of his professional accomplishments, Richard’s greatest joy came from his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose wisdom, curiosity, and steady presence enriched the lives of those around him.
Richard loved football, enjoyed a good game of poker, followed the stock market with enthusiasm, and was an avid reader throughout his life. He never stopped learning and never lost his curiosity about the world. Richard was also known for his spirited sense of humor, which brought laughter to family gatherings and conversations alike. Whether discussing current events, sharing stories from his remarkable career, or cheering for his favorite team, he brought intelligence, wit, and insight to every conversation.
Richard and Mary shared a love of travel throughout their marriage, creating memories together across the years. Among their favorite destinations were trips to the beach, where they enjoyed the beauty of the ocean, time together and with family.
