If you see a bright orange drone in your neighborhood, here’s why

IDAHO FALLS – Idaho Falls Power will soon deploy drones in multiple areas to inspect its electronic systems across the city.
Beginning next week — the week of July 27 — MJ Inspection Consultants will be deploying a specialized drone crew to inspect approximately 1,681 distribution poles throughout the Idaho Falls service area, according to a news release from Idaho Falls Power.
Phase one will occur in the area west of the Snake River.
“Using drones, crews will be able to inspect equipment from the air with high-resolution cameras and thermal imaging, identifying damaged components, loose connections, vegetation concerns, or signs of equipment wear before they lead to outages,” the release states.
The drones will provide access to areas that are difficult or hazardous for crews to reach, reducing the need for employees to work at heights or in challenging terrain while minimizing disruption to customers.
“While this is a new technique for Idaho Falls Power, utilities across the country have increasingly relied on drone technology to cost-effectively maintain electric systems,” said Alan Cunningham, Design Services Manager, in the release. “Drone inspections have become an industry best practice for improving safety, reliability, and preventative maintenance.”
Idaho Falls Power says residents may notice bright orange drones operating near power lines and utility poles during the inspection period.
All drone operations will be conducted by qualified personnel in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations and applicable safety requirements, according to the release.
The company says inspections are visual-only and focus exclusively on Idaho Falls Power’s electrical infrastructure.
The project does not require power outages, and crews will make every effort to minimize impacts on the public.
The aerial inspection program is expected to last just over a week and will establish a comprehensive baseline inventory of the utility’s distribution assets, allowing Idaho Falls Power to compare future inspections over time, monitor equipment conditions, and improve long-term planning.
