REXBURG – A brush fire that started on Wednesday near Rexburg has been fully contained.

The Byrne Side Fire has been 100% contained, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

At about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the Madison County Fire Department reported a new fire start in the Sunnydell area, south of Rexburg, that was burning approximately 100 acres.

Officials say the fire was caused by repair work on a railroad bridge. A spark from grinding operations started a fire that the railroad workers were unable to extinguish.

The fire then rapidly spread to a grain field and then to the hillside into sagebrush, burning a total of 150 acres.

At 10:24 p.m. on Wednesday, the fire department updated its original release, stating that significant fire activity had stopped, and there had been no further growth since Wednesday evening.

Firefighters kept watch over the fire throughout the night and completely contained it by Thursday morning.
