RIGBY — A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly sent graphic sexual images to a 13-year-old.
Jared Lee Depoister is charged with a felony for enticing a child over the internet.
Depoister has been assigned a public defender. The Idaho State Public Defender’s office does not comment on active cases.
According to court documents, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s detective was assigned to a case on May 28, where a 13-year-old girl was reportedly being enticed over the internet by an adult man.
The victim’s father had gone to law enforcement, saying that he had gone through his daughter’s phone and found a contact saved under the name “JJ.”
Looking at their conversation, the father said he found that “JJ” had been sending photos of his genitals to the 13-year-old. When he asked his daughter about it, the victim stated that the man’s name was “Jake” and that she had met him on Snapchat.
The father gave his daughter’s phone to detectives, who searched it for evidence and reportedly found that the man had been texting the victim from a “TextNow” phone number, which conceals his real phone number using an app.
The man allegedly had many text conversations with the young girl, mostly about sexual topics.
According to detective reports, the man told the girl it was “hot” when she explained that she was 13-years-old.
Court records say the man also sent at least four sexually explicit videos of people having intercourse to the 13-year-old, and allegedly asked her to send a photo of another young girl, asking “is she as hot as you lol.”
He also reportedly asked the young girl if he could record the two of them having sex. Court documents do not indicate that the two ever met in person.
On June 1, the victim participated in a forensic interview where she reportedly told investigators that she first met “JJ” on Snapchat, and that he told her he was between 20 and 23 years old.
The victim also stated that he told her that he lived “three states away” and had asked her to send him photos of her genitals.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for “JJ’s” TextNow account and determined that his real name was actually Jared Depoister.
Researching Depoister, detectives reportedly found that Depoister lives in Edgewood, Illinois, and had likely been sending the victim photos of himself from over ten years ago to appear younger.
Detectives then issued a warrant for Depoister, authorizing nationwide extradition to bring him to Idaho to face the charges.
Depoister was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Sept. 3 with a $100,000 bond.
He appeared in court on Sept. 3 and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 17.
If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison and $50,000 in court fines.
Though Depoister has been charged with this crime, it does not necessarily mean he committed it. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
